Walleye Ice Fishing in Lake Minnetonka

“Last call for walleye!”

Do you want to catch walleyes in Lake Minnetonka? You better hurry! We call this “late ice.” It’s getting towards the end of February and the fun is over soon. You are running out of time. Wait much longer, and the walleyes may be nibbling on you!

Do you want to know how to do it. ? Just ask Kirby Ellingson, of Kirby’s Bait in Mound, MN. Kirby’s the expert. He’s got the knowledge, the bait, and the gear you need.

According to Kirby, the walleyes are hitting on jigging spoons and fatheads. Expect an evening bite. Your best time is between sundown and an hour past sundown. Try thirty feet of water, near mid-lake humps.

In other fishing news, crappies are currently most interested in glow-jigs, waxworms, and crappie minnows. Dinner time for crappies coincides with dinner time for walleyes. If you are out on Lake Minnetonka ice looking for walleyes, you might as well bring something for the crappies. Also, northerns are being pulled out, especially by folks who are putting sucker minnows under tip-ups close to weeds.
